Chapter 6

Public Distribution

the UN keeps hunger, along with poverty, as the top two issues to tackle in its SDGs. While the world has seen a gradual decline in the percentage of undernourished people over the last few decades, it has lately also seen a growth in the absolute number of people that go hungry. With the growth of income disparity, at the face of climate change, and at the prospect of the rapid increase in population in developing countries, hunger has increasingly become a complex, yet necessary issue to address at the quickest pace. The Indian subcontinent is one of those areas on earth that faces a number of these crises daily and where fair distribution of food is a tangible issue, making food security one of the top priorities of any regional governments. This is where the Public Distribution System scheme plays an essential role, bringing nourishment to people with a lack of social privileges.
